Doubt To Live or Live To Doubt?
My life July 3rd, 2007
As a child I had many doubts on almost everything I saw. In fact I had doubts on almost every small thing I did during my childhood. Not bad or relatively acceptable are the only words which are synonymous to my doubts. Nevertheless I used to find them good and funny. I may have become more sensible than what I was at that time but I thought I could just put them down on my site. I can’t write all of them but only a few like:
- Why do most of the auto rickshaw drivers never use their wipers when it is raining? How can they drive with raindrops falling on their windshields?
- Moreover, what exactly does the writing on the auto “For 4 Only” exactly refer to coz I have never seen auto wallahs going by that rule.
- Why do we have to write our exams in either blue pen or black pen? Why not with red pen so that examiners can correct them in black or blue?
- Why do people who read a lot are called nerds? It is a great thing to actually sit and admire the real beauty of the book?
- Does being in love really mean you should have a girl friend?
- Have you ever noticed what is written on the back of a lorry or truck? It goes like this; OK….. Sound…Horn… Please…. OK. What does that ‘OK’ mean?
- Why don’t politicians ever promise something, which they can keep?
- What exactly is Western Influence? Is it admiring the west tradition or going against our tradition?
- Does being fair in complexion really mean beautiful?
- When can we say whether a developing country has become a developed country?
- Why should the eating plates be round in shape? Why not Square or Triangular?
The doubts, which I used to have in my childhood and the answers I got from others, even if they are wrong had so much impact on me that even now whenever I get reminded of that doubt I will be reminded of the answer I got in my kindergarten days. The most easy and universal example is that whenever a boy and a girl used to talk, they were termed as boyfriend and girlfriend in our school. It was not before the completion of my schooling that I could come out of that thinking. Also when I was told
that driving a car is all about handling the steering and when I actually started driving the car I gave importance to the steering and not to any other thing.
Instead of a wife doubting a husband or vice versa, how about a child doubting his parents of their originality?

Its not like doubting is an offense but the freedom the world has given to its living being made them doubt everything from religious sentiments to strongly rooted traditions. The irony is that every little thing is compared and evaluated with science. What is Science? I would love to doubt Science itself. I do not believe everything science says is right. After all I have the liberty to doubt. Right? If I go like this then I may end up doubting everything that science has proved. I am sure science readers may not like that.
By nature I do not trust people very easily. When I was a school kid I used to suspect every one who tried to be good to me or help me going out of their way. Also whenever I went to buy any new item, I always doubted the vendors who sold that particular item. I always had this doubt that I was being cheated and I am being sold a damaged product. I never went for any shopping alone. I would prefer having faith in my companion’s ability and opinion than the vendor.
I get calls from one telemarketing guy or the other for almost five times a day regarding some credit card or insurance. The moment I hear them saying about their product I come to the conclusion that they might be trying to trap me into their product. I never even think for a second whether there is truth in what they say.
I recently got myself a new bike. As usual I started doubting its performance the moment I started driving it. I am still skeptical about its mileage. I have to see when my petrol tank empties.
We have to believe in few things to live but that does not mean we have to stop doubting. Doubting gives rise to creativity and truth and no better example can be given than science itself. It is doubt which literally gave birth to science.
If doubting results in making that doubt to be true then I will always doubt everything and anything in such a way that it will happen in my favour and for that I do not mind being termed as a Doubting Thomas. Let me start with doubting whether readers will accept this blog or not.
Yours Always,
