Small Things

Small key opens a big door. I couldn’t have got a better example for this saying when my computer blanked out all because of an electric rice cooker. Can you believe that? In our electrician’s opinion , there was some misplacement in the cooker and due to which the electricity passed through the earthing and because of that every other electric and electronic instrument in the house became alive with electricity running all over their bodies. My computer could not handle this and my hard disk burned out. Anyway, I could not understand the whole process like what the electrician was saying and why my hard disk burned out along with my BIOS. The proximity of loss was in the ratio of 1:2. Due to equipment costing less than Rs. 2000, I had to bear a loss of more than Rs 4000.

The word small indicates things which are less in size and not in their importance. The general tendency of referring small things as small both in importance and usage isn’t always right. A small dent on a car can make the whole idea of a new car go wrong. A small stone can break a big glass pane. Small isn’t always small. It’s the small things, which can spoil your whole day. A small fall from your bed and a sprain ankle can guarantee the rest of the day to be spent in pain and gloom. Like it happened to me last month when I had to send a small file to one of my clients and I could not get connected to my Internet. I had to go all the way from my house to the nearest Internet cafe, wait for my turn, log in and then send. Then I had to go to my office. All this cost me 2 extra hours of nothing for a small file. It’s not about small file but its big importance that made me spend so much time on it.

Achievements, which give great happiness, need not be big achievements. Small things like doing the work for your loved ones without their knowledge to make them happy also gives immense happiness. The general reaction we hear when some one is happy might sound some thing like this; ” I felt so happy that I was floating”. This big happiness can happen due to small gesture by some one they are acquainted to or not.

It is astonishing how things are rated according to their size. A small chip does a great thing of making a whole computer run. A small hard disk can make a big industry run their business. A small cell phone can assure you of your loved ones safety. A small needle stitches a big cloth and gives it a look. A small needle or a pill can work wonders in healing a big and dangerous disease. A small pen drive can hold a very important information. A small switch can make a big factory come alive with electricity.

What is the measurement of the word small? The word Thank You is a small word. But its importance and the impact can be very high. Small thanks can make people willing to help others. Like wise the word sorry is also a very important one. It does not make you a small person by saying this word. A sorry can stop a quarrel in between two people. Measuring the above two words ‘thanks’ and ’sorry’ literally, they are not more that 6 letters. But each small letter can make big and powerful words, which can destroy the whole word. Like three letters W, A, R makes a deadly word WAR that can mean destruction.

It’s been many years since I left my History books behind but there are few things which cannot be forgotten like World War I and II, Nazi Movement, Policy of Blood and War and few other things. Among them is the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand when he was going with his wife in his car. This assassination is one of the reason that paved way to the origin of the Great War or The World War I. Assassinating a person is not a small thing but when you compare it with the starting of war between almost the whole world, then it might seem to be small given the fact that millions of people died in the war. If a person’s killing can lead to murdering millions of people then it is really worth mentioning.

Small miscommunication can lead to big problems including split in the partnership and relations. But the importance of that communication is very high. Apparently, the miscommunication will always be termed as small miscommunication without recognizing the fact that it can lead to such big things. How can it be termed as small when its impact is so big?

A few years back I stumbled upon a small note, which read like this ” In India a big truck has to stop because of a car, a car has to stop because of a bike and a bike has to stop because of a bicycle”. So the smaller the vehicle, the more importance it has got in the traffic fraternity. This may be true to all the countries but may not be easily seen in the developed countries.

Folks, small and little things can have a big impact on the way we live and the way we act.
